Benefits of Maple Syrup/Extract
When I think of maple, I think of big, beautiful trees and a delicious syrup that goes well on pancakes, french toast, waffles, bacon, and sausage. I've recently learned that it also has benefits for your skin. I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise, since honey does too; but, it's pretty cool all the same. Most maple sap comes from the sugar maple, the black maple, and/or the red maple trees, as these are the maple trees with the highest sugar content. I haven't been able to find info on differences in the benefits of each. Likely, all of the info I do have is based on the assumption that each syrup or extract is a blend of two or more of the above.
Health benefits of pure maple syrup
*High percentage of manganese--33% DV in 1 tbsp
*High in antioxidants, like polyphenols--pure maple syrup contains up to 24 different antioxidants
*Lower glycemic score than refined sugar
*Similar to raw honey, maple syrup/extract can be used in a mask.
*Maple products are increasing in popularity, for their antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other properties.
*The sap contains a humectant.
*Maple sap is a natural source of alphahydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, or citric), which serve as minor peeling/exfoliating ingredients
Knowing that raw honey and maple syrup are each healthier than refined sugar, taste terrific, and have benefits, both when ingested and on your skin, is almost enough to entice me to switch over all the way from refined sugar... Alas, refined sugar is much cheaper, which I expect to matter in my life for quite some time. However, we did (very happily) stock up on pure maple syrup when our local Aldi had them and a local beekeeper sells her raw sourwood honey at a workable price. I think our maple syrup stash will last my family for at least a year, while I'm also happy to find more ways to use it and my organic maple extract in my products. Of course, feel free to message me with custom orders. :)
Though I am reasonably confident in maple syrup's/extract's benefit to the skin, I can make no assessments on their effect on illnesses or other physical or mental ailments.
